In 2015, the Rehoboth Economic Development Committee (EDC) conducted a survey to gain a better understanding of what residents and voters thought about business expansion.  Results of the survey are still available on the town website.  At the time, most residents favored moderate business development while strongly valuing the rural character of the town.  We are once again conducting our survey and hope you will participate.

As we head into 2019, Rehoboth remains stuck in a difficult position economically.  With a hugely residential tax base there is an ongoing problem supporting the needs of both schools and public services.   Also, with most of our public buildings in deplorable condition we face an even greater economic hardship in years to come.

Very simply, residential tax revenue growth cannot keep up with expenses under the tax limiting Proposition 2-1/2.  Businesses consume substantially less in services (per tax dollar collected) than residential taxpayers, but the limited amount of businesses in Rehoboth are not sufficient to make up the shortfall.

In 2018, the town voted in favor of a tax override in order to provide the funds necessary for school and public services.  New tax bills due February 1, 2019 reflect the override.  While the effect is magnified because we will be paying for the increase for all of FY2018 in the next two quarters, our taxes won’t stabilize without changes.  In fact, keeping everything as it is virtually guarantees taxes will continue to increase at 2.5% per year and future overrides may still increase taxes further.

We are asking that you participate in our 2019 survey in order to gauge the opinions, desires and ideas of townspeople at this point in time.  This is your opportunity to express your views and let your town officials know what you think.  Please help us find a path to a better future and join us in the discussion.

Thank you.
